Creating Aural Training Resources

Updated: Jun 7, 2020

Resources and drafts created for Dictation Exercises (pitch and/or rhythm) and sight-singing for the Year 12 Music 2 unit of work

Including mixed meter dictations (for both pitch and rhythm), related to the focus piece.

First draft of resource for mixed meter rhythmic and melodic dictation created for the first two lessons, which focuses on Rush by Matthew Hindson. The idea is to introduce students to a mixed meter exercise (rhythmic dictation) as seen in the focus piece, and then for the following lesson, create a resource which gives students the opportunity to dictate a melody which uses the same rhythm.

Second draft was made I had completed my outline for the 6 week unit and had created a 'master plan' of the dictation and sight-singing exercises that my lesson plan required. I had first outlined the specific skills that I wanted students to focus on. For instance, exercise no. 5 is a sight-sining exercise in G Aeolian, as part of the lesson associated with this exercise focuses on The Astounding Eyes of Rita which use G Aeolian. Draft found here.

Third draft focused on creating answers for the exercises. This is crucial as it enables students to work more independently to check their own answers and see where they need to work on their dictation skills (e.g. rhythmic accuracy, recognising certain intervals etc). Where the rhythms were more challenging, I decided to keep the melodic material more simple (for example, outlining chords I IV and V as much as was appropriate). Third draft found here.
