Composition Further Analysis #1

Updated: Nov 18, 2019

Additional model pieces and analysis to further my understanding for my composition

Piece: Variations on a Theme by Sor (commonly referred to as Llobet Sor Variations)

Analysis: Variations on a Theme by Sor takes the theme from Fernando Sor's Folia Var Op. 15(A) theme and variations.

Variation 4 in this piece maintains the general structure of the bass line from variation 3 while adding a tremolo melody in the top voice, which takes two notes from the descending triplet melody (in the high register of the guitar) from variation 3. The top three tremolo notes in variation 4 are reminiscent of the quaver triplet rhythm of variation 3, creating a sense of familiarity while the legato slurs and rhythmically precise and consistent runs of variation 3 is contrasted with the slightly more static nature of variation 4's tremolo melody. The nature of the descending thirds however, in variation 3 is continued in variation 4 as many of the intervals in the tremolo melody are a 3rd apart.

Within my composition, I have kept the chords used from the theme in variation 1. I composed variation 1 with syncopated block chords, still chromatically descending in the top voice, to contrast the more legato yet repetitive tremolo melody from the theme, while adding passing notes (particularly upper neighbour notes) between the chord transitions in variation 1. The ending phrase of variation 1 is also different to the theme as it features a descending and then ascending melodic contour while the ending phrase of the theme features an ascending and then descending melodic line.

Ending of the theme and variation 1 in my composition (draft)

Here's a recording of Vladimir Gorbach (my amazing Guitar Lecturer at the Con!) performing Variations on a Theme by Sor Op. 15 - Miguel Llobet (variation 3 and 4 played in this performance).
