GTD and Digital Stress

Week 12 TME

Similar to week 6's lecture, I found week 12's seminar on GTD and digital stress to be invaluable and highly applicable to the technologically driven world that we live in today. For me, the takeaway messages were:

1. The brain isn’t capable of multitasking i.e. it can’t do two things at once efficiently but can think of two things at once.

The implications of this could include, not giving students a set of instructions while they are working on a task but instead ask for their attention and then precede to give them the instructions.

2. Exercise for 20 minutes to get your heart rate up in the morning – it significantly increases concentration and practice mindfulness for 5-20 minutes a day.

In addition to practicing mindfulness, I have also started focusing on exercising to increase concentration and productivity.

3. Create a "Done Wall” - it's an important to realise what you've already achieved!

When I begin teaching as a classroom music teacher, I'd like to try a process where each student creates a 'done wall' for themselves in music; an opportunity for each student to keep track of and reflect on what they've already achieved in their music education.

I found the following resource helpful in reflecting on strategies for using technology efficiently:

Lastly, here's a strategy for approaching incoming tasks:

--> Works comes in and options are (if it’s not actionable):

· Eliminate

· Incubate

· Reference

--> If it is actionable:

· Do it (if less than 2 minutes)

--> If it is not actionable:

· Delegate it (if several steps and other people need to be involved, sent it to them)

OR

· Defer it (next action lists, calendar, tickler file)

Here's a video which consolidated the lecture for me...
